West Lothian Youth Theatre logoWest Lothian Youth Theatre is becoming increasingly active within the European Union’s Youth in Action programme, devising and delivering youth exchanges and training support for youth workers across Europe.

Much of this work is carried out with a partner organisation in the Netherlands: The Richter Foundation. It is funded by the EU, through the Youth in Action programme’s National Agency in the UK, Connect Youth (part of the British Council).

Previous activity has included theatre based youth exchanges in the Netherlands, Azerbaijan and the Ukraine, and a training project in Scotland: Youth Theatre - A Tool for Social Integration. Participants in these projects have come from partner organisations from across Europe and the former Soviet republics.

During 2008 WLYT will work with The Richter Foundation to deliver a training event in Armenia: Youth Project Management – Tools for Social for Integration. The training will explore tried and tested techniques for setting up youth exchanges within the framework of the EU Youth in Action programme; and demonstrate how youth theatre techniques can be used as a tool for social integration in the context of youth exchanges. Delegates will attend from Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Armenia, Georgia, Slovakia, Moldova, Italy, Bulgaria and Belarus: as part of the training they will be encouraged to create new partnerships which can underpin future youth exchange work.

In addition WLYT has received EU funding to host a youth exchange in May in Scotland. Young people from Scotland, the Netherlands, Italy and Bulgaria will come together for a week and participate in film making activities as a means for developing cultural awareness and social integration between people from different European countries.

Reports on both of these projects will be produced once they are completed. Anybody wishing more information about working within the Youth in Action programme should visit Connect Youth . For copies of the reports email michael@wlyt.org.
