The above play is to be presented by The Horn of Africa Community Group’s youth project ‘Inspire to Achieve’ funded by Big Lottery for a rolling programme of youth development including drama, script writing, poetry, acting, dance, song, music, studio, mentoring, leadership skills and communication. It is scheduled to be shown on 21st May 2009 at Riverside Studio, Hammersmith.
The story follows on from last year’s play Urban Virus about young people’s struggle to find their place in society. It ends with one of the main characters Nur being stabbed after trying to intervene in a gang related issue.
Nur’s mother is devastated by what has happened and decides to leave the UK and go back to Somalia. In Somalia she realises that the country is going no where fast and has to make a heart breaking decision to return to the UK. Nur’s mum had been responsible for her sister and family and had applied for visas for them to come and join her family. They come back together to face further challenges, heart ache and success!
Outline: the story is about families arriving in the UK and what they have to face to make it in this country. The play shows the importance of learning fast on how to survive, network, learn a new language, new culture and the loss they also experience along the way: loss of family, country, friends, etc. Many arrive from war torn countries and the UK is a safe haven for them. The new environment changes them forever both in good ways and bad!
The Horn of Africa Community Group are also looking for a cameraman to film the above play which is to be shown at Riverside Studios on the 20th May.
