30 November – 2 December (3 days) 10am – 4pm

Bouffon is an artform that originated in medieval times but really came into its own during the renaissance period. It’s where the ‘ugly’ people or social outcasts (due to physical deformity etc) were invited to perform for the entertainment of the ‘beautiful’ people at festivals or at special religious events.

Dark and grotesque it is a wonderful artform to explore as a performer. Finding out what are your devilish joys, and who are you best at sending up? Could this be the basis for a new and exciting circus character? Full of energy, wit and humour the bouffon is a fantastic device for both theatre and circus. Great bouffon clowns have graced Circe de Soleil, and Kneehigh amongst many others!
